Social norms

To tackle established beliefs, MFIs need to raise the awareness and sensitivity of management and staff on the causes and forms of child labour. Only then should institutions attempt to raise awareness among clients. For both, MFIs can cooperate with local (NGOs) or international partners (like the ILO) to offer training based on ILO tools against child labour, and develop and broadcast public awareness campaigns via radio. National or regional microfinance associations have a great potential to address social norms as they can facilitate the coordination and cooperation with local and international partners for the microfinance industry.

MFIs can condition the use of their financial services on attending education or training sessions on child labour. Furthermore, they can develop, together with clients or the community, a code of conduct to which microfinance clients shall adhere.
